Why Do Managers Fail?

In these videos, which are based on the first blog post, 5 reasons why managers fail are given. It suggests that, despite the many Linked In posts and articles on the fact that people leave managers not companies, management failure is primarily the fault of companies and organisations promoting managers for the wrong reasons, when they are not ready. Both video versions are essentially the same, but presented differently.

1. What Is The Main Purpose Of A Manager?

In this video the main purpose of a manager is outlined and explained. What is it that a manager needs to do in order to be effective? Not knowing this is one reason why managers fail. It is something that is foundational to the role and is a key aspect of management that all managers should understand.

3. Why Is Integrity Important For Managers?

In this video, based on the free pdf article below, the meaning of integrity is discussed along with why it is such an important quality for all leaders, and therefore all managers, to practise. Integrity helps to build trust and respect between the leader and his or her followers, which in turn helps to influence them.

Recommended Books

These are some of the books I recommend to managers to read to further enhance their understanding of the topics, including a number of excellent leadership books. They are hyperlinked to an excerpt from Amazon:

  1. The Leader’s Code – Donovan Campbell. Every chapter covers a characteristic of an effective leader taken from the U.S. Marine Corp’s officer training. Very well written, with an excellent chapter on humility.
  2. Leadership – Peter Northouse. A great course book that covers leadership in a lot of detail. If you decide to buy and find it expensive, the student edition is cheaper, or possibly order an older used edition. An excellent resource.
  3. Effective Leadership – John Adair. He has been the UK’s foremost expert on Leadership, and this is probably his best book on it.
  4. Winning – Jack Welch. On how to win in business. His chapter on 8 leadership rules has some excellent points.
  5. The Leader’s Companion – J. Thomas Wren. This might be a surprise choice, but it contains many of the original articles that have shaped the discussion on leadership today.
  6. 5 Levels Of Leadership – John Maxwell. There are a number of John Maxwell books on leadership. Any would be helpful. He is a leadership writing’s giants.
  7. The Chimp Paradox –  Prof Steve Peters. Managing your emotions is important for all leaders as managers. This book provides a mind management technique, based on science, that will help you to do so.
That is a start. More to come. Most are on effective leadership, which is a key part of being an effective manager.
